My tag line would read:
"A toad, a bird, a spider, a shifter and a Martian - not your everyday spaceship crew!"

Normally here I like to give my opinion on what the back cover should say but honestly I think I will stay with the original it does an excellent job...
Things aren’t what they seem to be when Princess Olivia of Andromeda jumps aboard a spaceship to escape a loveless marriage.
Join the crew of the Hummingbird as they take on the rich, famous and sleazy of the galaxy. They're also on a long-term secret mission, so it's a good thing they're the best con artists, spacers, and roughnecks in the Milky Way, because they need all their skills to pull off this particular Royal Scam. ~courtesy of Musa Publishing
I must say Gini Koch has done it again - created a world or in this case a universe rich in complexity and deep in character and she did it all in 27 pages!

The Royal Scam is the begin of a series of stories (one does hope for a full length here) about a group of space "con-artists" - I use that term lightly because I really see them as the "no where else to turn call us people."   This particular story focuses on the abilities of Danielle Daniels as well as introducing you to her gang of cohorts and the universe they adventure in.

Danielle Daniels is a rarity among the galaxy, she is a true shifter able to become anyone inside and out.  Danielle has a talent and she isn't afraid to use it especially when it can be so much fun.  *pause* as I remember one particular scene that involves pants dropping *end pause*  It's perfect for the life she leads one of a con artist or as I like to think of it fixer of other peoples problem.  It also helps that she has a close-knit group of aliens (humanoid and non-humanoid) she calls friends.  It also doesn't hurt having a Martian think you are the sexiest thing alive in any form!

What I loved about this short is the fact that I didn't feel cheated.  It was written as a moment in time for this group, their descriptions, their history were woven in so seamlessly that you felt like you've been reading about them forever and this was just the latest adventure.

What I didn't like about this book - the length.   Seriously, I want more.  The Scifi genre is very lucky to have found Gini Koch and I hope she is here to stay.   I can't wait to see what adventure this crew finds next.

Shhh... I think I know what they really are up to.

4.5 Moons -  I loved it!

Disclose: I received this as an advance readers copy from Publisher. Please note that I am also the Administrator of the Authors fansite this however is an honest opinion of how I felt about this particular short story.
